What’s In a Name?

New Year. New Name.

I started this blog almost two years ago and it has opened many doors and given me amazing opportunities. I have two great partnerships with Popsugar and Stylelist, as well as affiliations with various companies. I have been very lucky.

When I first started The Coral Court, I didn’t expect many of the perks that went along with this job but I also didn’t realize the criticism that I would receive too. I seemed to dip my feet into too many types of blogging (Beauty, Fashion, Lifestyle) and then I quickly changed to another one. I didn’t feel like putting myself into one category made me happy. There are bloggers that solely focus on fashion and they have such inspirational posts, way more than mine could ever be.  Doing all fashion posts, taking the time to do my hair and makeup everyday is too exhausting and so un-fullfilling. To be honest, I barely wear makeup so to get dolled up everyday to take pictures was wearing on me. When I started doing one fashion post a week, I started enjoying it more because I was able to solely focus on making that one outfit look great instead of worrying about having an outfit for everyday of the week.

When I partnered with Popsugar, I was presented with so many more topics to blog about. It was not just about fashion but different products, types of food, television, movies, and introducing great causes. I couldn’t be more thankful to Brittany, Emily, and Anna for my opportunities. You three rock!

2014 was a tough year for this blog. I jumped around a lot. I took unannounced breaks and I felt so restrained with both the name of the blog and its direction. I made the name, The Coral Court, on a whim and tried to make it too similar to other blogs that were out there. I still love the meaning behind it but started to think  about it and I don’t want to be like the other blogs. I do not want to fit into any category.

With this being a new year, I decided to change the name of my blog to All 5 Kinds. It was a no brainer for me. My dad always tells me that the world takes all kinds of people and I thought about when someone asks me what my blog is about, I want to be able to say “it is about all kinds of things.”  The 5 is a symbol of family for me. There are five very important members of my family but beyond that, even my extended family is so crucial to the running of this blog.

My dad is the one that I bounce ideas off of and gives the best constructive criticism. He has supported this since the beginning. My mother is the best advertiser by using word of mouth to promote it. My brother had to take over as photographer, which is a job that I know he never thought he would have to do but has been a great sport about it. My sister is always willing to try out the products and give another point of view. My cute grandmother checks this blog first thing when she wakes up and makes the best comments-“Kristi, I think that skirt was too short! Do you want me to patch up those holes in your jeans? How can you walk in those shoes?” Lastly and possibly most important, my cousin, Rachel, has truly been my lifesaver when it comes to the visuals and graphics for this blog. She is the most patient and talented graphic designer that I have ever met. When I told her I was going to change the name of the blog, I know she probably thought I was crazy but started on a new logo anyway. I could not be more thankful and blessed.

With all of that being said, I am in a happier place with where this will go and I have learned that if I need a short break to recoup, I can take it.  I can blog about fashion when I want to or my favorite books or a new hair product that I found or a way cool website that I can’t stop visiting. There are many possibilities.

So here’s to 2015- share the new name, new blog, new idea with your friends.

I’m back!

Kristi

I love this post because I truly can relate! My blog is Lavender Sundays and I just started it a couple of months ago. I’m totally new to the blogging world, Twitter world.. and even Facebook world (not kidding) so I’m still in the “exploration phase” of all this. I have the exact same feelings about my blog as you do yours — I want to create posts on various aspects of my life and focusing on only one wouldn’t be fulfilling. I would get sooo bored only talking about my “#OOTD” all week… or doing only beauty tutorials…. but mixing those in with a delicious recipe or two and some bargain decor finds… now that compilation can make for an interesting week! I’ve wondered if I should narrow my focus; however, I don’t feel that I would be staying true to my passions if I did. So, thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

I can totally relate to trying to fit your blog to be like others! I’ve taken a LONG break from blogging and while I want to get back into it, I’m trying to figure out the direction I want to go. Good for you for finding your niche! I love the new name and love the variety of posts! Here’s to a great 2015!
