Onward & Awkward
Today I am sharing a story and a shirt that are both near and dear to my heart. In March, doctors found a lemon-sized ependymoma in my four year old cousin Ramona’s brain. It was removed shortly after it was discovered at the Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Since then, she has been undergoing radiation treatments like a champ and staying with her family at the Ronald McDonald House during the week. Everyday holds many triumphs and trials for Ramona but through it all she is keeping such a positive attitude! I can not imagine the emotional toll it it taking on her parents but they continue to be so strong.
Throughout all of this, her family wanted a way to give back to all of the amazing doctors that have been with them through this journey and so they designed this t-shirt with proceeds going directly to the Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute. The story behind the saying stems from when Ramona was leaving a neighbor’s house one evening and the neighbor said “onward and upward!” and Ramona turned that into “Onward and awkward!” The lemon signifies the size of the tumor that was found.
